Malcolm's Mystery Quilt
Part 2
by Cindy Jones
This quilt pattern was the first I developed as a Mystery Quilt.
The design is very simple and suitable for even the novice quilter. I would
like to take this opportunity to thank those who have volunteered to "test
drive" my mystery quilt pages. If you have questions you can e-mail
me at mcmjones@hawk.igs.net.
I hope you enjoy doing this quilt as much as I enjoyed designing it.

NOTE: That this pattern does not include directions for pressing as
rule. It is recommeded that you read through the steps prior to beginning
to see how best to offset the seams.

Step 2 - Now we begin to SEW
- Take the 4 pieces of LBlue measuring 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches.
- Set these aside. You have completed the first 4 squares, I told you
this was EASY!

Step 3 - NOW we begin to sew!
- Using the 1 7/8 x 1 7/8 Yellow & Blue (you have 16 of each), place
them right side together
- Place the ruler's 1/4 inch line across the square on the diagonal,
draw a line across the square
- Rotate the ruler 180 degrees, and draw another line

- Sew on both the lines you drew, and then cut on the true diagonal
- Repeat 15 more times to produce a total of 1 1/2" squares
- Press them flat with half the seams towards the yellow and the other
half towards the blue
- Oh come on, that wasn't that bad;
- Was it?

Step 4 - Some assembly required
- Sew the squares together in pairs with offset seams such that, they
form rectangles with the LBlue in the centre forming a triangle.

- You will have 16 rectangles (2 1/2" x 1 1/2") when done

Step 5 - Rectangles and Triangles
- Divide the Rectangles created in Step 4 into 2 piles of 8.
- Set one of these piles aside
- We will use the 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Yellow Squares and the second
pile.
- Place a yellow square right side up
- On this square place a rectangle wrong side up, such that the long
side side that is all yellow is matched up to the right side of the square.
- Sew, Open, Press the seam toward the yellow square

Step 6 - New Rectangle
- Place the rectangle created in step 5 face up such that the blue triangle
is on the left
- On this square place a rectangle wrong side up, such that the long
side side that is all yellow is matched up to the right side of the square.
- Sew, Open, and Press the seam toward the Yellow square

Step 7 - Play it again, Sam
- Repeat Steps 5 and 6 three more times
- You will then have 4 rectangles that look like this.

Step 8 - Now we begin to SEW
- We will use 8 Yellow/L Blue Rectangles created in Step 4
- We will also use 16 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" L Blue squares
- Attach a LBlue Square to either end of the rectangle, so that they
look like the image below.

- Repeat for a total of 8 long rectangles
- Press the seams towards the Blue squares

Step 9 - More Assembly!
- You will need every piece previously manufactured which contains yellow
- Use one large rectangle and two of the smaller ones
- Sew them together such that they form a yellow star and create a large
4 1/2" x 4 1/2" square
- Repeat for a total of 4 stars

Step 10 - Almost done
- You will need the stars created in the previous step
- Then locate the 4 LBlue 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" strips (grab the
4 LBlue 6 1/2" x 2 1/2" strips as well, you will need them too!
- Sew 1 LBlue 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" strip to any side of a star (creating
a 4 1/2" x 61/2" rectangle)
- Sew 1 LBlue 6 1/2" x 2 1/2" strip to either long side, creating
a 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" Square
- Repeat 3 times (thus you now have 4 large squares)
- Press everything flat
Next Page, we continue to sew!
