Malcolm's Mystery Quilt
Part 3
by Cindy Jones
This quilt pattern was the first I developed as a Mystery Quilt.
The design is very simple and suitable for even the novice quilter. I would
like to take this opportunity to thank those who have volunteered to "test
drive" my mystery quilt pages. If you have questions you can e-mail
me at mcmjones@hawk.igs.net.
I hope you enjoy doing this quilt as much as I enjoyed designing it.

Step 11 - To Begin
- Using one 2 7/8 x 2 7/8 L Blue & Dark Blue, place them right
side together
- Place the ruler's 1/4 inch line across the square on the diagonal,
draw a line across the square
- Rotate the ruler 180 degrees, and draw another line

- Sew on both the lines you drew, and then cut on the true diagonal
- Repeat once more to produce a total of 4 half square triangles
- Press them flat
- Oh come on, that wasn't that bad;
- Was it?

Step 12 - Same assembly, different colours
- Repeat the previous step using 3 each D Blue and Bright B 2 7/8"
x 27/8" squares
- You will have 6 half square triangles when done

Step 13 - Attaching them together
- We will use 2 LBlue/DBlue half square triangles (step 11) and one DBlue
2 7/8" x 2 7/8" square
- Sew the half square triangles together as shown below

- Cut the DBlue Square diagonally
- Attach the triangle produced above to the right side of the rectangle
set and produce
.

Step 14 - New Rectangle
- You need 2 DBlue/LBlue half square triangles and the other LBlue 2
7/8" x 27/8" square
- Attach the 2 half square triangles together as before
- Cut the Square from bottom left to top right
- Attach the LBlue triangle e to the LEFT side of the pair
- The product should look like this

Step 15 - Making Bigger Triangles
- You need 1 LBlue 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" square and the shapes created
in steps 13 and 14
- Cut the LBlue square once diagonally
- Attach one half of the large light blue triangle to each of the strange
shapes from steps 13 and 14. This will create two large triangles
- Match LBlue to the SECOND longest side of the strange shape
- CONFUSED??? -------->See the image at Step 16

Step 16 - SEW Square
- We will use one 6 7/8" x 6 7/8" Bright B square and the triangles
created in step 15
- Cut the Bright B square diagonally
- Attach a Bright B Triangle to each large triangle (step 15) to create
two different 6 1/2" 6 1/2" squares
- One should look like the following image, the other slightly different

Step 17 - More Assembly!
- You will need
- two 6 1/2" x 41/2" Bright B pieces
- 4 DBlue / Bright B squares
- two 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Bright B squares
- Take 2 DBlue/Bright B squares and one 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" square
and sew as shown

- Sew one 6 1/2" x 4 1/2" Bright piece to the top (so that
bright touches bright)
- Repeat the above to create a second identical block

Step 18 - Almost done
- Find two DBlue/Bright B Squares and one Bright B square
- Also find one Bright B 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" strip
- Sew the squares together as shown

- Attach the Bright to the top
- Press everything flat
Next Page, we continue to sew!
