Malcolm's Mystery Quilt
Part 4
by Cindy Jones
This quilt pattern was the first I developed as a Mystery Quilt.
The design is very simple and suitable for even the novice quilter. I would
like to take this opportunity to thank those who have volunteered to "test
drive" my mystery quilt pages. If you have questions you can e-mail
me at mcmjones@hawk.igs.net.
I hope you enjoy doing this quilt as much as I enjoyed designing it.

Step 19 - Opposites Attract
- You will need
- 1 White 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" square
- 2 LBlue 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" squares
- Place the White square right side up
- Put the LBlue squares face down in OPPOSITE corners
- Draw a diagonal line across each of the two LBlue squares, such that
the end of each line touches a side of the white square. These are your
sewing lines.

- Sew, Cut the corners off and Press

Step 20 - Modified Rectangles
- Time to use the following:
- 2 White rectangles 3 1/2" x 2 1/2"
- 2 LBlue squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
- Place one White rectangle right side up with the short side on the
top
- Put one LBlue square face down aligning the top edge.
- Draw a diagonal line across the square from TOP LEFT to BOTTOM RIGHT
- Sew on the line
- Cut off the corner and press

- Repeat for the second rectangle, EXCEPT the line will go from TOP RIGHT to
BOTTOM LEFT

Step 21 - Making Something
- We will use:
- the rectangles created in Step 20
- 2 LBlue 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" strips
- Add 1 LBlue strip to the Long White Edge of the rectangle
- Repeat with the other rectangle

Step 22 - Some Assembly Required
- You will need
- the blocks from Step 21
- the block from Step 19
- one LBlue 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" square
- Assemble as shown below

Step 23 - Bigger Squares
- Find
- one 6 7/8" x 6 7/8" LBlue square
- one 6 7/8" x 6 7/8" Bright A square
- Place them right sides together
- Draw a line on the diagonal
- Sew 1/4" each side of this line
- Cut and press
- You now have two squares

Step 24 - SEW Rectangles
- We need
- one 6 7/8" x 12 7/8" LBlue rectangle
- one 6 7/8" x 12 7/8" Bright A rectangle
- Place the rectangles RIGHT side to WRONG side
- Cut in half on the diagonal, it doesn't matter which way
- Separate and sew opposite colours together to form two rectangles
- You will need to allow for the 1/4" seam when you put the triangles
together. You can do this by leabing small tail of fabric at either end
of the stitching line.

Next Page, we continue to sew!
